Grease at Smith’s Wood: Smith’s Wood Academy transformed into Rydell High this week as talented students prepared to stage Grease, the school’s first show in 13 years.
Supported by a professional sound company, lighting technician and a six-piece band, the cast will perform for family and friends on Thursday 9 and Friday 10 July.
The production, the academy’s first since 2013, has created a buzz across the school – following six months of rehearsals.
Kate Tucker, the school’s Assistant Principal, Safeguarding Lead and teacher of Dance and Drama, has led preparations for the show, which began in January with rehearsals three nights a week.
“The production is fantastic. The students have worked so hard. Their singing is amazing, their dancing is great, and it will be a really good night out for everyone who comes to see the performance.
Miss Tucker added that the experience had helped students develop confidence and stage presence.
She said: “I couldn’t be prouder of the cast. The energy and excitement among them is incredible. The camaraderie among them is inspiring, they all look after each other, despite being from different years and age groups. They’re already talking about auditioning for next year’s show!”
The show is also expected to mark the return of an annual school production at Smith’s Wood Academy.
Sophie Coleman will play Sandy, while Mckenzie Mann will take on the role of Danny.
“Mckenzie has been especially brilliant,” said Miss Tucker.
“He is in Year 11 and has now left the school, so this was his last opportunity to take to the stage here at Smith’s Wood. He has absolutely lived and breathed the show for the past few months.”
Ahead of opening night, the cast will also perform a matinee for primary school pupils, including many who are due to join Smith’s Wood in September – giving prospective pupils a chance to see the opportunities and facilities available at the school.
Miss Tucker said: “We have a huge theatre and auditorium with tiered seating and amazing sound quality.
“We’re hoping the incoming Year 6 students can see how much we value the arts here.”
