Paralympic legend shares media skills with Smith’s Wood students

Smith’s Wood 4Schools workshop: Students at Smith’s Wood Academy hoping to kick-start a career in broadcasting got behind the microphone to commentate with stars from Channel 4.

Sports broadcaster Dan Strange visited Smith’s Wood Academy alongside his sister and 5 x Paralympian and wheelchair basketball coach Clare Griffiths, on Wednesday 15 April.

The workshop formed part of the 4Schools programme, which aims to inspire young people aged 11 – 14 to consider careers in the media.

Students took part in a range of hands‑on activities, including conducting a live interview with Clare, practising live commentary over sporting moments, operating cameras and even stepping into a voiceover booth.

Jenny Savory, of 4Schools, said: “We’ve been doing work at Channel 4 with Smith’s Wood for a couple of years now, and the students always show great enthusiasm.

Year 8 students experienced many different aspects of media production.

“It’s a great way for the students to find out what skills they need to go into the creative sector, and this time we brought equipment in for them to actually get their sleeves rolled up and have a go at creating TV themselves.”

Careers Advisor Dee Long added: “This was one of the best days I have had at Smith’s Wood. The students were a credit to the school – so well behaved and engaged – and it was clear that all of them took away something positive from the event.

“I’d like to give a big shout out to some of our students – to Aneel Abagana, Boating Kwanzambi, Conner Evans and Blesing Bushabu for delivering standout performances on the day.

“Massive well done also to Savannah Crisp and Olivia Hooke, who gave the workshop a real go, even though it pushed them out of their comfort zone.”

The partnership with 4Schools continues to bring fresh opportunities for students at Smith’s Wood, which is part of Fairfax Multi‑Academy Trust.

It’s just one way the Trust demonstrates its commitment to enriching lives and transforming futures, and the school looks forward to more visits from inspiring role models next year.
