JOHN WILLMOTT STUDENTS DEBATING STARS LEARN NEW SKILLS

John Willmott School debating stars – more than sixty students will get the chance to take the floor and learn the fine art of debating in an ambitious new project.

Pupils from Years 8, 9 and 10 will take part in Debate Mate, which will see mentors from Birmingham University teach them how to debate an argument and compete in a national debating competition.

Earlier this month the John Willmott School debating stars attended the launch of the scheme at the University, where they watched a debate on the proposal of ‘making everyone vegan’.

After the launch, student Callum said: “I learnt how debates work and enjoyed watching the debate. Now I’m looking forward to taking part.”

Pupil Rebekah added: “I enjoyed experiencing a real life debate and I also learnt that people’s opinions matter and they want to change the world for the better.  It was enjoyable and I’d love to do it again”.

Sixth Formers from the school, which is part of the respected Arthur Terry Learning Partnership, could even win a trip to Dubai after entering a competition in which they debated as Prime Minister and Chancellor.

Two students, Tatenda and Jenna have already used their debating skills to win through to the second round.

“Our students will participate with this programme during enrichment sessions, and they’ll have the opportunity to test their skills in two of the largest debating competitions in the UK as well,”

Headteacher Tracey Peters said: “Debate Mate is a very prestigious programme that we are excited to be part of this year.

“It aims to increase speaking and listening attainment and improve a range of skills and abilities such as confidence, teamwork and leadership.
