Plantsbrook School sports success sees all-conquering teams sweep the board

Plantsbrook School sports success has seen talented students enjoy a record-breaking year, picking up silverware in numerous sports and competitions.

Talented youngsters at the Upper Holland Road School have picked up trophies in football, netball, basketball, trampolining, hockey and table tennis, and are still in the hunt for more before the end of the academic year.

Chris Brough, 35, who has been Plantsbrook’s Head of PE for four years, said: “We have a very inclusive approach here that encourages everyone to get involved in sport and compete, but promotes excellence too.

“The pupils have a lot of pride in the teams they represent, and they love playing against other local schools and the friendly, competitive edge there is to the games. We’re very proud of them.”

Plantsbrook School sports success has seen the Year 7 football team almost do the ‘treble’ – winning the District Cup and the Aston, Erdington and Saltley Cup at Aston Villa’s Bodymoor Heath training ground, before being knocked out of the Birmingham Cup in a dramatic semi-final penalty shoot-out.

The Year 7 netball team are already regional and county champions and are undefeated all year. Plantsbrook’s Year 8 hockey team are also undefeated in all competitions and haven’t conceded a goal this year.

The boys of the Year 8 table tennis team netted the Sutton schools championship, as did the Year 9 basketball team. Plantsbrook’s trampoline squad are flying high too, after being crowned the best in the West Midlands.

“The pupils have a lot of pride in the teams they represent, and they love playing against other local schools and the friendly, competitive edge there is to the games. We’re very proud of them.”

“Sutton is a really strong area for sport, and all the schools work together to promote competition,” Mr Brough said.

“Next year we’re looking forward to the opening of our new sports hall and new outside surfaces too. We will be embracing these new facilities to give the kids even more opportunities to compete and benefit from being involved in sports.”
