Bournville School foodbank donation collects hundreds of items

Bournville School foodbank donation: Generous students at Bournville All Through School led a brilliant food donation initiative in celebration of the harvest season.

Children from across the school’s primary and secondary schools took on leadership roles to gather food for the B30 Foodbank, which was collected on the 24th October.

For primary school pupils, the food drive was part of their annual Harvest Festival celebrations.

Primary safeguarding lead, Ajinder Bharj explained: “Parents were invited to attend the Harvest festival assembly, where they could donate food. These donations were on display throughout the assembly to show what we’d managed to collect.”

Secondary students, on the other hand, were challenged to collect food to demonstrate their ‘Initiative’ – part of the school’s ‘STRIVE’ values.

Assistant Principal, Miss Poole said: “Our student leaders worked together excellently to organise the drive and collect donations.

“In primary school, the School Council were responsible for collecting, while secondary school leaders showed their initiative by installing a donation bin in the Elgar Foyer.”

Together, students managed to gather 20 bags full of essential foods and toiletries – enough to fill a van!

The main food items donated were meal staples such as pasta, rice and sauces, as well as a wide variety of tinned goods.

Miss Poole said: “The food drive is an annual event here at Bournville, and something we’re really proud of.

“It’s an important aspect of our citizenship work across the school, where students learn about the world around them and do something for others in the community.”

Bob Jones, Operations Manager at B30 Foodbank, thanked the students for their generous donations.

He said: “With the cost of food at the moment, donations to the food bank really help us to support local people.

“Our food parcels are given to anyone in need living in the Northfield parliamentary constituency. They can be referred in by a professional or from one of our projects.

“It is great when the pupils, staff and parents come together as a community to support people on our community when they need it most.”

Miss Poole said: “Initiatives like this teach our students to think of others, help the less fortunate and to be responsible, active citizens – something at the core of our school’s values.”
