Solicitors visited Sutton schools to give budding legal eagles a glimpse of life in law

Inspirational solicitors visited Sutton schools to give budding legal eagles a glimpse of life as a lawyer with a talk to sixth formers.

Former Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School student Sukhpreet Dhalivaal and her colleague George Gwynn, who went to Plantsbrook School, visited sixth formers to give a presentation and answer questions on how to get into the legal profession.

George is a newly-qualified solicitor while Sukhpreet is a litigation support lawyer at Bell Lax Solicitors, and they were joined by legal director Richard Kerry for the presentations on Monday and Wednesday this week.

George said: “It was great to come back to Plantsbrook, it has changed so much since I was there. The pupils were really switched on and raised some great points – we hope our answers will help to inspire the next generation of lawyers.”

The presentation explained to students the different areas of law in which solicitors can practice, and laid out the kinds of training routes and qualifications open to students who want to pursue a career in law.

Students heard about the challenges and rewards of being a lawyer, as well as getting useful insights into the kinds of work they could choose to do in the legal profession.

Sukhpreet said: “It was great being back at Vesey and to speak to the students – they were asking genuine questions and were keen to hear about life as a lawyer. I think it was useful that George and I were able to talk to them, because as ex-students they could identify more with us.”

Bell Lax, which specialises in family law, accident and medical negligence claims, litigation and dispute resolution, is Sutton Coldfield’s largest established legal practice and is based in the iconic former TSB bank building near the Empire Cinema.

Richard added: “It is important to us to connect with local schools because we are seen as a long-standing Sutton business and it was great to give a little guidance to students who could be the next generation of lawyers from Sutton.

“Bell Lax has a track record of bringing through local legal talent, and we felt this would be a great opportunity to provide a useful insight for students considering a life in law.”
