A new Shrubbery School bus means that pupils will be travelling in style – after they designed artwork to decorate it.

Pupils at the Shrubbery School, in Walmley Ash Road, took part in a contest to draw pictures to brighten up the Mercedes vehicle, which is used for school strips and to take the children swimming every week.

Now nine-year-old Paynton Donlon’s clever and colourful drawing has taken pride of place on the back of the new Shrubbery School bus, after teaching staff voted it the winner.

She said: “I was so happy when I found out I had won the competition and my parents were really happy too.

“I wanted my picture to show all the things that we can do at the Shrubbery, so everyone can see it when the bus is driving around.”

Drawings by five runners up – Isabelle Whalley, 11, Samarth Vijay, 10, Bryoni Platt, 9, Myla Dash, 6 and nine-year-old Georgina Brown were used to decorate the sides of the bus.

Headteacher Amanda Lees said: “We were so impressed by the children’s drawings and they really enjoyed taking part. Now Paynton’s artwork will be seen by people in Sutton every week, when the children go swimming.”
