An ATLP anti-bullying event saw pupils across the Arthur Terry Learning Partnership put their best feet forward to raise awareness of bullying – and their efforts will knock your socks off!
Monday, November 16 was Odd Socks Day, marking the start of Anti-Bullying Week – when youngsters across the country are encouraged to wear mis-matching socks to school.
Organised by the Anti-Bullying Alliance, the event encourages students to donate £1 to help finance the alliance’s vital work in raising awareness of the impact of bullying.
And students of all ages at schools across the Sutton-based Arthur Terry Learning Partnership were up to the challenge – finding fabulous footwear to join the fun.

At Hill West Primary School in Sutton, the Swallows, Owls, Kingfishers and Moles in Reception proudly posed for pictures in their silly socks, while pupils at Slade Primary School in Erdington joined the footwear fun too.

Jenny Maskell, headteacher of Slade Primary School, said: “Thanks to everybody at Slade for taking part in Odd Socks Day 2020 and Anti-Bullying Week. We are united against bullying and are very proud that our school community is committed to ensuring others are treated with respect, kindness and understanding.”
Hill West Headteacher Dr Beth Clarke said: “We were keen to support Anti-Bullying week and the celebration of difference with our odd socks. We have also been selling wrist bands in school this week courtesy of our PTFA, which say ‘Hill West United Against Bullying’ and the children have been really enthusiastic about purchasing them and wearing them.”
At Stockland Green School, in Erdington, students take part in a week-long series of activities for the ATLP anti-bullying event, to emphasise and support the important message behind the annual anti-bullying campaign.
Marie George, headteacher of Stockland Green School, said: “We were delighted to take part in Odd Socks Day for Anti-Bullying Week. Every year, staff and students here take part in this key event to raise awareness of this important issue.
“During this week – and throughout the year – we are involved in a number of activities to support the anti-bullying agenda and I am very proud of how our school community comes together to send a clear message of kindness and inclusion for all.”
The Anti-Bullying Alliance was established by the NSPCC and the National Children’s Bureau in 2002 and is hosted by the National Children’s Bureau. It provides expertise in relation to all forms of bullying between children and young people.
ATLP anti-bullying event objectives are:
- To raise the profile of bullying and the effect it has on the lives of children and young people
- To create a climate in which everyone agrees that bullying is unacceptable
- To make sure that teachers, youth practitioners, parents, carers, children and young people have the skills and knowledge to address bullying effectively.
