Nether Stowe handball stars make it to the national finals

Nether Stowe handball stars – A team of young sporting stars from Nether Stowe School deserve a ‘big hand’ – after making it to the national finals of the growing sport of handball.

The Girls 13s handball team at Nether Stowe, which is part of the Arthur Terry Learning Partnership, are bidding for glory after making it to the national finals.

Their success story comes as part of a long list of recent sporting achievements at the Lichfield school – all accomplished at Aldersley Stadium, in Wolverhampton, on the 8th May.

Having qualified from the county and regional heats in a fantastic show of skill and sportsmanship, the Girls 13s team will now be playing for the win in Nottingham in June. The standout player of the day was Daisy Mole, whose talent shone bright on the court.

PE teacher Beth Merrick said: “It goes without saying, we have never competed at this level before at Nether Stowe and we are so very proud of our girls.

“We can’t wait to hear more details about the final, and we wish them the best of luck – they’re absolute super stars!”

The Boys 13 and U15 teams also made it to the regional level, with Oscar Furmaniak of the 13 team and Finn McIlkenny of the U15 team being noteworthy standouts.

Also on the podium were Niamh Patrick (2nd in javelin), Finn McIlkenny (2nd in high jump), Mia Fennell (3rd in 200 m) and Olly Brown (3rd in long jump).

Miss Merrick said: “The dedication of our athletes has been so admirable, with some even competing in both handball and solo athletics.

“They have all been impeccable representation for Nether Stowe, and we have been incredibly proud of all that have taken part.

“The effort, desire and support for each other was top notch.”
