William MacGregor anti-bullying week: Youngsters at a Tamworth school were floating on air last week when they each collected a balloon from their school gates – and found a message of kindness attached to it, just for them.
Pupils at William McGregor Primary School, which is part of the respected Arthur Terry Learning Partnership, took part in a special project called ‘One Kind Word’, as part of National Anti-Bullying Week.
For the project, each child was given the name of a classmate, and encouraged to write down one kind word that represented them the most, along with the reasons behind their choice.

Class teacher Jas Kang explained: “With each other’s help they tied the ‘One Kind Word’ paper to a balloon and stuck it to the gate of the Glascote Road school.
“Then, at the end of the day they could find their own name with their parents and read their own ‘One Kind Word’ that someone had written about them.”
The activity was designed to show how words can have an impact on feelings and how One Kind Word can set some one up for a good day.
As part of Anti-Bullying Week, the children also all wore odd socks, to emphasis that everyone is different, but it’s that difference that unites us.
Headteacher Suzie Norton said: “As a school, we always value the importance of anti-bullying week in our school calendar, as it provides planned and purposeful learning that brings to the forefront how we should all treat the people around us.
“These values are intrinsic throughout our curriculum, but it is important that we use this week to provide reminders for our children.”
Among messages of kindness attached to the balloons were:
Friendly – always lets people join in with what she is doing.
Supportive – gives out equipment and resources
Respectful – listens to me
Loving – if I am sad, she comes up to me to check why
